Our Story & Beliefs
We are a Christian community of believers who gather together to worship God and to serve others.
For the past several years, Mount Calvary has shifted its emphasis from being a programmatic church – in accordance with popular church models of the 1990s and 2000s – towards remembering and reimagining its primary role as a community of faith. In this community, worship, faith formation, service, and meaningful relationships are the bed-rock of how we choose to practice our discipleship. With these foundational practices, the people of Mount Calvary prepare ourselves for the difficult work of being disciples in our everyday life. These emphases were part of the learning we underwent in our strategic planning efforts in 2014. During this time, we decided to focus on meaningful worship, faith formation opportunities for all ages, and a return to hands on service for our neighbors. These emphases have informed all of our larger changes to our programmatic life. It is our sincere hope that by focusing on these important aspects of discipleship, the people of Mount Calvary will experience a deepening of faith and be better able to listen to the Holy Spirit.
As a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), we confess the Triune God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. In our preaching and teaching, we trust the Gospel as the power of God for the salvation of all who believe. ELCA teaching or theology serves the proclamation and ministry of this faith. it does not have an answer for all questions, not even all religious questions. Teaching or theology prepare members to be witnesses in speech and in action of God's rich mercy in Jesus Christ.
Every Sunday in worship, ELCA congregations hear God's word from the Scriptures, pray as Jesus taught, and come to the Lord's Table expecting to receive the mercies that the Triune God promises. Throughout the week, we continue to live by faith, serving others freely and generously in all that we do because we trust in God's promise in the Gospel. The Holy Sprit uses these witnesses to create, strengthen, and sustain faith in Jesus Christ and the life we have in him. That life-giving work continues every day.

In the fall of 1960, the first service of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church was held in the basement of the original parsonage at 4110 Diamond Drive in Eagan. It was attended by 38 adults and 30 children. The church's official charter was signed by 92 members two months later. In the spring of 1961, the first church building was completed at the current location. The two level building comprised what is now the Fireside Room and classroom area below. Sixty families attended the first service in the new building, which was held Easter Sunday, April 2, 1961. The congregation continued to grow throughout the late 1960’s and 1970’s along with the surrounding community. In 1977, a new sanctuary, narthex, offices, kitchen, basement and fellowship area was added, nearly doubling the size of the existing building. The first services there were held April 23, 1978. By 1978, the church's baptized membership had increased to 1,400. Mount Calvary's population, like the local community, began to level off in the 1980s. In January 1985, the church had over 1,500 baptized members and more than 400 students in its Sunday school. In 1999, the sanctuary received a major update. In 2004, another major renovation took place to expand the narthex, nursery, and office spaces. A year later in 2005, the church opened a food shelf and referral resource center in its former parsonage as an outreach ministry. This project soon took on a life of its own and in 2009 became its own non-profit entity; The Open Door (formerly the Eagan Resource Center). In 2020, Mount Calvary celebrated its 60th anniversary much as it began in 1960. A vibrant and relevant Lutheran community of Christian believers that continues to grow and change to meet God’s challenging yet rewarding call. We are proud to be family oriented, committed to missions both locally and globally, and focused on our faith in the Lord.
